Andre Hartman, Great White Sharks, South Africa
due largely to a combination of the successful Steven Spielberg movie JAWS (adapted from the Peter Benchley Novel of the same name) and a general lack of public knowledge, for years the image of the Great White Shark has inspired fear and prejudice. Yet even now, when science is barely scratching the surface on the true nature of these amazing animals, we are already beginning to understand that they are not the mindless eating machines of JAWS fame. Rather, the Great White Shark symbolises the power of evolution, and is a keystone species that holds a critical position in many marine ecosystems.
Having survived for millions of years, the Great White Shark (like all Sharks) has remained a vital cog in the evolution and balance of the Earths oceans, shaping all life within it. Their finely tuned senses allow them to exist seamlessly within their environment, where as an apex predator they control the abundance their prey, removing sick and weak individuals. Unfortunately, their sublime grace, perfect adaptations, and cautious elements of their character have often been blurred behind misinformed, violent media frenzies, depicting them as soulless, single-minded, killing machines.
Andre does not contend to be a conservationist, researcher, or advocate for marine life. He is a man of the sea who is driven by curiosity and a personal admiration for one of world’s greatest ocean predators. His natural curiosity and desire to learn about this fascinating species has, however, made huge contributions to the way in which this maligned species if perceived by the millions of people whose lives he has touched. Nowadays the great white is respected as a marine predator that it is, not irrationally feared as the ‘man-eater ’ that it is not. Much of this changing perception can be credited to one man… Andre ‘the Sharkman’ Hartman.
