Andre 'The Sharkman' Hartman is one of the worlds truly legendary naturalists. As the pioneer of free diving with Great White Sharks, Andre paved the way for the worlds greater understanding and appreciation off this once maligned ocean predator
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Andre’s first encounter with a great white shark occurred whilst he was spear fishing on the cool waters of the Southern Cape. He returned from this encounter shaken but unscathed. Little did Andre know that this chance enounter would set his life on a path of discovery in which he would delve deeper into the hidden world of the great white shark than anyone thought possible.. a journey that would see the Sharkman emerge as an untouchably unique pioneer
Like many, Andre grew up nervous of sharks, yet his profession, as a free diver, commercial diver, and underwater ship salvager meant that encountering sharks was inevitable. Following his first encounter with a great white his initial fear slowly turned to curiosity, as this curiosity to understand these maligned predators grew so did his willingness to place himself in their environment meeting them face to face, without the protection of a cage.
In a few short years, Andre’s remarkable feats of free diving with great white sharks began to attract international media attention, and since 1998, when he first hosted a National Geographic expedition, his talents and abilities have circulated the world through 100’s of wildlife documentaries, magazine articles and books.
Less is known about Andre’s camerawork, fixing, film production and ability to always produce the shot for film crews and tourists alike. Behind many of the iconic images, video clips and documentaries on white sharks, stands one man with an extraordinary vision and array of talents, the Sharkman… Andre Hartman.
Today, a living legend and seasoned veteran of great white shark diving, Andre continues to offer lectures, presentations, guided cage diving trips and host film productions.
